Mortal Kombat 2 was released in theaters in the spring of 2026 as the sequel to its 2021 counterpart. Derived from the classic 90s arcade fighting game developed by Ed Boon and John Tobias, the franchise now has four films in total. Two films were released previously, one in 1995 and its sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, in 1997. Now that the franchise has had time to develop its stories through the games over the years, this new movie faces mixed reviews as to the success and future of the movie series as a whole.
Mortal Kombat – Before The Tournament
The first movie takes the concepts of the overall story in a whole new direction. We follow an MMA fighter named Cole, who is the descendant of a ninja that goes by the alias Scorpion. He learns of an upcoming tournament that will determine the fate of his world, which goes by the name Earthrealm. Together with four fighters, they train alongside the god of thunder named Raiden, who is Earthrealm’s protector. They are preparing for the upcoming tournament to defeat a conqueror named Shao Kahn, the emperor of Outworld.
The Elder Gods of all six realms have selected and endowed special powers to five fighters from each realm. Earthrealm is next on Shao Kahn’s list. If they lose the tournament, then Shao Kahn will merge Earthrealm with Outworld, and then it’s GAME OVER.
Mortal Kombat 2 – The Tournament Begins
The sequel takes place sometime after the events of the end of the first movie. With Kung Lao, who was part of Earthrealm’s fighters in the tournament, deceased, Raiden has identified the replacement for their five-man squad. The replacement is a failed action movie star who goes by the name Johnny Cage. Raiden and Sonya meet with Johnny as he prepares to leave a convention in the parking lot. Upon seeing Raiden’s powers, his curiosity causes him to follow the two heroes to Raiden’s Sky Temple.
Johnny witnesses the rest of Earthrealm’s fighters sparring in preparation for the tournament. However, upon learning that his life will be at risk, Johnny backs out and returns through the portal back home. Although Johnny has backed out of the tournament, it did not stop the Elder Gods from having Johnny participate against his will. Johnny now finds himself face-to-face with one of Outworld’s fighters, the princess of the realm of Edenia, named Kitana. With the stakes now even higher, the first round of the tournament begins.
Mortal Kombat 2 Too Bad
As the tournament progresses, the movie does a terrible job of explaining the rules of the tournament and what counts as a win and a loss. This is evident when, at the end of the tournament, there are three fighters in the finals, yet the supernatural markers for how many fighters are left in the tournament show four combatants left.
The concept of the Elder Gods bestowing powers upon their participants feels like an unneeded tactic in the world of the story. We have sorcerers such as Shang Tsung and Quan Chi who hold magical abilities and are not participating in the tournament. Other notable characters, such as Baraka, have abilities native to their kind. Having people awaken their own abilities with the use of Qi, since it is based mostly on Asian motifs, feels more appropriate and believable in the grand scheme of things, just like the games. Just about every character uses magic, so it should not be a gift from the Elder Gods.
Traditionally, it was the sorcerer Shang Tsung who acted as both proctor and combatant in the tournament. However, that position for this movie was left to the Elder Gods; Shao Kahn as a participant in the tournament overall. The first scene of the movie shows the past when Shao Kahn fought King Jerrod of Edenia in their tournament. The movie made it as if King Jerrod was the only fighter out of five chosen soldiers, though the rules of the tournament were never disclosed in full. Jerrod displayed no special powers or abilities at all given by the Elder Gods. In the future, his wife Sindel hints that she has been given a power for the tournament, too, when fighting Sonya, so it is strange that Jerrod received virtually no special power to aid in the fight against Shao Kahn.
Lastly, the film has a high focus on feminism in its approach with Kitana, as well as the likeness of her comrade Jade. Kitana has been heavily marketed to the public for this movie, but the story fails to give her any character flaws to help the audience truly care whether she lives or dies. In essence, the one character who showed the most promise in the film was Johnny Cage, played by actor Karl Urban. This is because he is a failed action movie star who knows real martial arts with several black belts. He no longer believes in himself due to his failure as an action star, as the movie industry moved on without him. After losing his match against Kitana, who spares him, the guilt weighs heavily on him for being the possible cause of Earthrealm’s destruction. As a result, Johnny allows Raiden to teach him about life in general. This is something that you can buy into more than with Kitana, and the movie should have had more of a focus on Johnny.
Mortal Kombat 2 Expectations
Expect lots of action, familiar scenes from the games, and incredible art design and visual effects. Do not expect story accuracy, and for the tournament to make any sense. The Mortal Kombat tournament is to take place in Outworld. However, the tournament within the Mortal Kombat 2 game was the Outworld Tournament conducted by Shao Kahn due to his loss of the Mortal Kombat tournament when Liu Kang defeated Shang Tsung. The Outworld Tournament is the last effort for Shao Kahn to take Earthrealm, but the Mortal Kombat 2 film borrows the MK2 logo and stages and changes the narrative completely. If it were not for characters such as Johnny Cage, Kano, and Baraka, the movie would not be entertaining at all.
