A Smart Man’s Movie – The Amateur
The 2025 film “The Amateur” starring Rami Malek alongside Laurence Fishbourne was one of Hollywood’s early action blockbusters to lead the new year. The film had amazing shots, storylines, and action sequences that leave you guessing. Inspired by the novel written by Robert Littell, this cleverly written and directed remake of the 1982 movie is one of a kind in today’s audience.
No Amateurs Allowed
The story opens up with Charles Heller (Rami) working in his shed, where he is met with his wife Sarah played by actress Rachel Brosnahan, who is preparing to leave the country on a business trip to Europe. Charles’ character comes off as very smart, and very loving, but also very timid, which adds to his likeability on screen.
We are then taken to the day-to-day routine of Charles during Act 1 of the movie, where he bumps into a few key characters, which will be instrumental to him later in the movie. As a techie for the CIA, Charles is very meticulous and is one of the key designers for the encryption data used by the CIA. As the story progresses, we notice an interesting connection between himself and an unseen figure whom he chats with online, who has just given him sensitive information involving a series of accidents overseas, which involves key figures in the CIA, who are his bosses.
Tragedy Strikes
The following day, he is met by one of his bosses, the CIA Deputy Director named Alex Moore played by Holt McCallany. Moore tells Charles to come and see him in his office, where it is disclosed to him that an accident had taken place in Europe, resulting in the death of his wife. The news at first is unbelievable to him until he sees the news footage and testimonials. Charles’ world has flipped upside down, but to set it upright again, Charles wants to hunt down the terrorists responsible for the death of his wife and kill them.
Charles is now on a quest for justice and retribution, but he is ill-equipped to handle the task of executing professional killers. On top of that, he needs a license to kill, an alias, and money to fund his mission, but his bosses will not allow it. And this is where things become tricky.
An Interesting Twist
The movie is a tale about one man’s quest for vengeance in the name of love, and it is unquestionably an action packed movie filled with ups and downs, with turns that keep you guessing. You will have to see it for yourself on how someone who is not physically strong obtains strength using the very brain that got him his job to begin with.
