Obsession was released in theaters this year, in 2026, and has proven to be one of the most entertaining movies of the year thus far. The movie debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival and was written and directed by actor and comedian Curry Baker. With such a small cast, this movie is set out to do big things, and you are sure to get your money’s worth for this movie ticket.
Obsession – AWKWARD in a Good Way
Obsession tells the story about a young man named Baron, nicknamed Bear, who is rehearsing with his friend Ian and a waitress on how he is going to finally tell his crush named Nikki, that he is in love with her. Bear is unsure if what he plans to say is enough to let Nikki know how he truly feels, but Ian encourages him to give it a shot.
Later, Bear arrives home to find his cat deceased. Bear manages to deduce that his cat died from a drug overdose, having found its way into his medicine cabinet. Nikki and Bear end up talking on the phone, and she manages to convince Bear to come out with Ian, her, and Sarah from work for the night. Unfortunately, Nikki lost her crystal necklace down the drain during their conversation. This event gives Bear the idea to surprise Nikki with a replacement charm.
Bear arrives at a store that sells charms and crystals, where his eyes become fixed upon an item in the store called a One Wish Willow. The One Wish Willows can grant any wish, once you follow the instructions. Bear makes his purchases, and later that night, Bear gets the opportunity to drive Nikki back home from the bar.
Nikki and Bear make conversation, which deepens as he pulls up to Nikki’s home. Bear attempts to call Nikki back, but fumbles his opportunity to tell her how he feels. As she walks back to her front door, Bear makes his wish that Nikki would love him more than anyone else in the world, and upon breaking the stick, Nikki returns with the urge to be by Bear’s side. Eventually, love blossoms, but takes a very interesting turn for the worse.
Get Obsessed
The most interesting things about this movie are the foreshadowing elements, subtle clues on the relationships, and how it all crescendos to a peak that leaves you flabbergasted. The movie Obsession explores the idea of dating in the modern world in America. It takes the psychology of social interactions and social norms and turns them into plot devices. The writing was well done, and causes the audience to identify the clues of social engagement like a game, which is evident through the character blocking in every scene.
Lastly, the actress who plays Nikki named Inde Navarrette (born Danielle Fabiola Navarrette), delivers an incredible performance, drawing on the social sciences of human interaction, evident not just in her blocking but in her facial expressions. The actors and this story will definitely make you feel obsessed to the very end.
